Separate image from claim

Record the claim precisely: location, date, people and event. A photograph can be authentic while carrying a false caption. Preserve the post link and wording being checked without further spreading private details or distressing material.

Look for earlier versions

An image-search tool, such as the one described by Google Help, may find similar images. Compare framing, details, captions and page dates. The first displayed result is not necessarily the first publication. No result does not prove an image is new or authentic.

Cross-check independent clues

Look for signs, architecture, visible conditions and the creator’s account, then compare identified sources. Do not identify a private person by resemblance alone. Metadata may be absent or changed; it is a contextual clue, not standalone proof. Separate observations from assumptions in notes.

Publish a proportionate conclusion

State whether context is confirmed, contradicted or unknown. Unresolved doubt supports not sharing a claim, but not accusing someone of manipulation. If you shared a misleading version, correct it with the recovered source and explain what changed.

Hypothetical example: apply the method

A photograph presented as recent appears on an older page. The team checks matching details and concludes the new caption conflicts with that record, without inventing the photographer’s identity.

Frequently asked questions

Does a realistic image prove an event?

No. Context, provenance and sources still need checking even without obvious visual defects.

Is an automatic detector enough?

Do not turn its output into certainty. Find references and state verification limits.
