Separate following, search and recommendation

A feed may combine accounts you follow, search results, trends and automatically selected posts. The order varies with the service, selected setting, country, age and account history.

A recommendation does not mean content is true or represents a majority view. It mainly means the system predicts that the item may hold attention or satisfy an objective set by the platform.

Recognise signals that shape the feed

Clicks, follows, reactions, shares, searches and explicit choices can influence suggestions. Time spent on an item may also be interpreted, even when you watch because you are surprised or disagree.

One action does not always retrain a feed. Systems combine many signals and change over time, so be cautious with promises of a universal formula or guaranteed visibility trick.

Use the controls that are available

Look for controls such as not interested, hide, follow, unfollow, chronological order or non-personalised feed. On some very large platforms available in the European Union, the Digital Services Act requires more explanation and an option not based on profiling.

Names and locations change. Consult the provider’s official help and check whether a setting affects the main feed, one section or only the current session.

Build intentional diversity

Add sources that do not all cite one another, search for topics directly and review your follows periodically. For an important claim, leave the feed and inspect the primary source, date, context and several analyses.

Treat the feed as an environment you help shape. A one-week experiment with fewer automatic reactions and more deliberate searches can show which actions genuinely change your experience.

Frequently asked questions

Does the algorithm have to be listening through my microphone?

A surprising recommendation is not proof of listening. Platforms already have many signals from activity, follows and context. You should still review device permissions and the service’s policy.

Can I completely reset my feed?

Some platforms offer a reset or history controls, while others do not. Check official help and expect new activity to shape recommendations again.

Is a chronological feed neutral?

No. It still depends on the accounts followed, available posts and sometimes ranking rules. It reduces some personalisation without removing every editorial or technical choice.
