What is Element for?

Element is a messaging and collaboration app based on Matrix. Learn about rooms, provider choice and recovery precautions.

Application, protocol and provider: three separate choices

Element is a messaging application using the Matrix standard. A provider hosts the account; different applications can use the same account. Element names the app; Matrix names the communication standard. Review the terms of your chosen provider.

Start with a test room

Create a private test room, check its encryption and prepare recovery before inviting others. Use non-sensitive information. Define who can join and read history, then check what an ordinary member sees before sharing the link.

Prepare message recovery

The Matrix guide explains that messages in an encrypted room require keys. Prepare the recovery methods offered by the app and keep them protected. Never send them to a supposed support agent. Menu names and procedures can change.

Compare with Signal

Element allows choosing a Matrix provider and participating in rooms; Signal focuses on private messaging between contacts. Does your group want to choose its host and administer rooms, or start with messaging between contacts?

Questions for the provider

Which room rules apply? Who handles reports? Which data is retained? What storage limits and export options are available? Choosing an app alone does not answer these questions.

Keep in mind

Check room encryption, devices and key recovery. A public room and a private encrypted room do not share the same protections.

Frequently asked questions

Are Element and Matrix the same service?

Element is an app; Matrix is the standard it uses. The account provider is a third choice with its own terms.

Does a public room protect messages like a private encrypted room?

Do not transfer protections from one space to another. Check access settings, room encryption and participants’ devices.
