A shareable link is not restricted access
The word “private” does not mean the same thing everywhere. On YouTube, a private video is restricted to chosen people; an unlisted video can circulate through its link. On Dailymotion, the mode named “private” remains accessible to people who have the link. Check how it works before sharing sensitive content.
Practical differences
| Service and setting | Who can access? | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube — public | Anyone; discovery through search and recommendations is possible. | Choose this for content intended for wide distribution. |
| YouTube — unlisted | Anyone with the link, including after resharing. | The initial recipient is not the audience boundary. |
| YouTube — private | You and people selected for private sharing. | Check recipient access before final delivery. |
| Dailymotion — private | People with the link; the content does not appear in search. | Do not equate this with YouTube’s named-recipient private sharing. |
| Pinterest — private board | The owner and invited people. | Check invitations and content added to the board. |

Private account and private publication
A private account limits some content but does not necessarily hide your name, profile picture or presence in search. On TikTok, those identity elements remain visible. On Facebook, finding a group and the privacy of its discussions are separate choices.
A five-step check
- Define who should see the content: everyone, a group or named people.
- Read service documentation for the exact setting, not only the account.
- Share a non-sensitive test file with an intended recipient.
- Check what happens if the link is forwarded to another person authorised for the test.
- Review title, description, comments and metadata: they can reveal other information.
Frequently asked questions
Can an unlisted video circulate?
Yes. Anyone with the link can forward it. Do not use this mode as a confidentiality guarantee.
Does deletion erase every copy?
It affects the source content according to the service. Screenshots, downloads and recipients’ copies may remain. On Tumblr, reblogs on other blogs remain after account deletion.
Practice and next steps
Choose an old post and describe its actual audience, resharing possibilities and visible profile information. Correct the setting if its audience exceeds your intention. Record what you checked without copying sensitive content.
